5 oldest churches still in use

 1. Etchmiadzin Cathedral

The original church was built over a pagan temple as early as AD 301, while the core part of the current building comes from the 5th century.

Today it is the seat of the head of the Armenian Apostolic Church

The interior is adorned with beautiful icons and ornaments

2. Panagia Ekatontapiliani

According to a legend, this church complex has 99 doors in total. 

The hundredth door, the legend says, will appear once Hagia Sophia becomes Orthodox again

The literal name of this place is "the Church with a Hundred Doors" and it is home to a complex of churches and chapels, the oldest of which go back to AD 326.

3. Saint Peter's Basilica 

Saint Peter's houses extraordinary works of art such as Michelangelo's Pieta. 

It's also the burial site of Saint Peter himself as well as many other popes and saints

This church dates back to AD 333, though it was rebuilt in the 16th century. 

It is perhaps one of the most well-known churches in the world

4. The Church of the Holy Sepulchre

Consecrated in 335, this is one of the most important places in the history of Christianity.

This church was built over the place where Jesus was crucified and buried.

5. Church of the Nativity 

Located in Bethlehem, this church was commissioned by Constantine the Great and dedicated in AD 339. 

It was rebuilt in 6th century by Justinian the Great and remained mostly unchanged since then, This church houses the Grotto of the Nativity, the place where Christ was born into this world.

The exact place of His birth is marked with a silver star.
